We’re writing to let you know about urgent work we need to carry out on our gas network in Fletching Street, Mayfield. We’d be grateful for your support in sharing this information with your wider network of contacts to allow drivers to plan their journeys.

Since Monday 29 June, our engineers have been investigating reports of gas escapes near the junction with High Street. Our checks have confirmed that around 185 metres of metallic gas main, laid approximately 70 years ago, is now in poor condition and needs to be replaced immediately. This will ensure we can maintain a safe and reliable supply of gas and prevent the need to future disruptive repair work.

To keep gas flowing safely and reliably to homes and businesses in the area, we’ll be installing a new, larger plastic main. This means we’ll need to open‑cut a trench in stages along Fletching Street. We’ll also upgrade any old metallic service pipes supplying nearby properties, working from the High Street junction towards The Avenue.

For everyone’s safety, Fletching Street will be closed around our excavations throughout the project. Signed diversion routes will be in place for affected drivers. All going well, we expect the work will take around four to five weeks. Pedestrian access will be maintained, and our teams will speak directly with any property where service pipe upgrades are required.
